First: if a vape got you off cigarettes, that’s a genuine win. Vaping is far less harmful than smoking — that’s the consistent position of UK health bodies — and swapping was one of the best things you could have done for your health. But “far less harmful” isn’t the same as harmless, and many people reach a point where they’d like to be free of the vape too. Here’s how to do it without undoing your hard work.
The golden rule: don’t rush back into smoking
The single biggest mistake we see is quitting the vape too early, white-knuckling the cravings, and drifting back to cigarettes within a month. If it comes down to a choice, staying on the vape is far better than returning to smoking. Come off it when your smoke-free habits feel solid — for most people that’s somewhere after the first few months, and there’s no prize for doing it sooner than you’re ready.
Step down, don’t jump off
- Lower the nicotine strength gradually. E-liquids come in clear strengths — drop one level at a time and let each settle for a couple of weeks before the next.
- Shrink the habit’s territory. Make some places vape-free first — the car, the bedroom, your desk — so the habit loosens before the nicotine goes.
- Watch the ‘graze’ effect. Unlike cigarettes, a vape has no natural end point, so all-day puffing can creep in. Try treating it like a cigarette: deliberate breaks, not a constant companion.
- Have a plan for the last step. The jump from low-strength to zero is easier with the craving skills from our programme — the 4 Ds, urge surfing and a support call when you need one.
Who our programme can help — an honest note
One important thing to be clear about: our funded 12-week programme is for people who are currently smoking cigarettes. If you’ve already switched completely and now only vape, we sadly can’t enrol you just to come off the vape — the funding exists to get smokers off cigarettes, where the greatest harm lies. Everything in this article is still yours to use, and your pharmacist or GP can help you plan the final step.
Two situations where we can help directly: if you’re still having cigarettes alongside your vape — even just the odd social one — you count as a smoker and you’re very welcome to join the programme*; and if you quit smoking with us, stepping down off the vape when you’re ready is part of the journey your advisor will plan with you.
Service free for those who don’t pay for NHS prescriptions. One single prescription charge for the full 12 weeks if you do pay for prescriptions.
